About Dr Alex Chen

Dr Alex Chen is a locally trained specialist cardiac anaesthetist. He was born in Taiwan, and his family migrated to Australia when he was the age of 4. He completed his schooling at Christ Church Grammar School in 1997. In 2003, he completed his six years of medical studies at the University of Western Australia. After his internship and residency at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital, he commenced anaesthesia training and obtained his fellowship in 2011, subspecialising in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. He also has a certification in echocardiography from the United States echo board.

Current Practice

Dr Alex Chen currently has a part time public appointment at Fiona Stanley Hospital, and a private practice at Precision Anaesthesia in Mosman Park. At Fiona Stanley Hospital, he is mainly involved in cardiothoracic anaesthesia including heart and lung transplantation. In private practice he subspecialises in neurosurgical and spinal surgery anaesthesia. He also works regularly with plastic and reconstructive surgeons, ENT surgeons and Maxillo-facial surgeons.

Consultations

Dr Alex Chen will always see and speak with you prior to your surgery. For a majority of patients this will occur in hospital on the day of surgery.

Depending on the complexity of the surgery and anaesthesia, and your medical history, consultations may be required either in his rooms, via Skype/FaceTime, or via phone.

After your Surgery

If you have particular concerns post operatively, you can contact Dr Alex Chen either through the hospital or through his rooms even after your discharge from hospital. In very rare occasions, Dr Alex Chen may contact you post operatively for a consultation and further tests if there has been a severe reaction during your anaesthetic. 

Out of pocket expenses

Dr Alex Chen is an HBF preferred provider and this means funding shortfall for a majority of procedures. All other health funds will incur an out of pocket expense. Please check with his rooms for quotes and other billing enquires.

Hobbies

In his spare time, Dr Alex Chen enjoys playing/watching sports (particularly cricket and formula one), music (he has an associate diploma in pianoforte) and spending time with friends and family.
