Do I Need a Referral?

You don’t need a referral to book an appointment with us — anyone can make a booking.

However, a valid referral from your GP or another specialist means you’ll be eligible for a Medicare rebate, which helps reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Here’s how it works:

✅ If You Have a Referral ❌ If You Don’t Have a Referral
You’ll receive a Medicare rebate You’ll need to pay the full consultation fee
You’ll need to pay the full consultation fee You can still book, but no rebate applies

If you don’t have your referral yet, you can still book your appointment — just ask your GP to fax it to (08) 6478 7632 before your visit.

Tips to Prepare for Your Consultation

  • Plan ahead: Write down your health history, past diets, and symptoms
  • Bring support: You’re welcome to bring a partner, friend, or family member
  • Be honest: This is a no-judgement zone. The more we understand, the more we can help
  • Ask anything: No question is too small — we’re here to support you

What Will We Cover in the Appointment?

During your visit, we’ll take a whole-person approach to understand your needs and goals. Together, we’ll explore:

  • Is bariatric surgery right for me?
  • Which procedure is safest and most effective for my health?
  • What will life look like after surgery?
  • What support will I need before and after?

You may also begin discussions with other members of our team — including a bariatric GP, dietitian, nurse practitioner or psychologist — depending on your plan of care.

Do I Qualify for Weight Loss Surgery?

We’ll consider:

  • Your BMI and weight-related conditions (e.g. diabetes, sleep apnoea, PCOS)
  • Your past weight loss attempts and what has or hasn’t worked
  • Your readiness to make long-term lifestyle changes
  • Any medical or psychological factors that may affect your outcome

If surgery is appropriate, we’ll map out the next steps together — including the option of medication, pre-operative tests, dietitian appointments, and hospital planning

Next Steps After Your Visit

By the end of your first consultation, you’ll understand:

  • Whether you qualify for surgery
  • Which procedure is recommended
  • What the pathway looks like — from preparation to recovery and beyond

You’ll also receive a clear timeline and plan personalised to your health needs and goals.
