Aurora Medical

Specialist Medical Service within

Aurora Bariatrics & Metabolic Medicine

At Aurora Medical, we recognise that weight management is about more than willpower — it’s about biology.

Our team provides evidence-based medical care at every stage of the weight-management journey, from initial assessment and medication therapy to long-term follow-up and metabolic health support. As part of the Aurora Bariatrics network, we offer a structured, non-surgical pathway that aligns with our surgical programs in quality and patient care. Each plan is personalised around the patient’s metabolism, lifestyle, and medical history to deliver lasting, sustainable results.

What is Aurora Medical?

Aurora Medical is a specialist service within Aurora Bariatrics & Metabolic Medicine, providing medically supervised, non-surgical management of obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Our clinicians offer comprehensive assessment, pharmacotherapy initiation (oral and injectable), and ongoing review for adults who are not surgical candidates, not yet ready for surgery, or require post-operative optimisation. Through an integrated, multidisciplinary model, Aurora Medical combines medical management, education, and evidence-based follow-up to improve long-term metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes. We work closely with general practitioners to ensure coordinated, safe, and outcome-driven care.

The Aurora Medical team brings together leading experts in bariatric and metabolic medicine who share one goal — helping patients improve their health and quality of life through safe, sustainable weight management.

Dr Ruth Blackham
Consultant Physician – Metabolic Medicine

Dr Ruth oversees the medical program at Aurora, guiding patients through complex metabolic assessments and providing specialist support for those managing obesity-related conditions. With a focus on patient-centred care, she ensures every treatment plan is grounded in clinical evidence and long-term health outcomes.

Our Approach

At Aurora Medical, patients are never treated as simply a number or a diagnosis. Our team works collaboratively to understand each person’s medical background, goals, and challenges before tailoring a treatment plan that’s right for them.

Each plan is guided by three pillars:

  1. Education – Empowering patients with knowledge about how their metabolism, hormones, and medications work.
  2. Evidence – Using real-world data and clinical best practice to guide decisions and measure outcomes.
  3. Ongoing Support – Providing consistent follow-up, accountability, and access to a multidisciplinary team that truly understands weight management.

This continuity of care is what makes Aurora different — a long-term partnership in health that extends beyond surgery or medication.

When is Weight Loss Medication Needed?

Weight-loss medication is a clinical tool designed to help manage obesity — a chronic, biologically driven condition.

It may be suitable for individuals with:

  • BMI ≥ 30, or
  • BMI ≥ 27 with comorbidities such as hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes, or sleep apnoea.

Each patient undergoes a full health assessment before therapy is recommended.

How Does it Work?

Modern pharmacotherapies target hormonal pathways that regulate appetite, satiety, and energy balance—particularly GLP-1 and related mechanisms. They help patients feel fuller for longer, reduce cravings, and improve glycaemic control and cardiometabolic risk factors. While many patients achieve significant weight loss within the first 6–12 months, ongoing use is typically required to maintain these results, as discontinuation often leads to partial or complete weight regain. These medications are most effective when combined with lifestyle modification and regular clinical review as part of a comprehensive, long-term management plan.

Oral vs Injectable Medication

Type Description Duration Average Total Body Weight Loss Notes
Oral medication Daily tablets that act on appetite or metabolism Either 12 weeks or ongoing ~5–8 % May be used short term or where injectables aren’t suitable
Injectable Therapy Weekly injections Ongoing therapy with review 10–15% Most effective long-term medical option; also improves insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular risk
Bariatric Surgery (for comparison) Alters gastric capacity and hormonal feedback Permanent ~25-35% Ideal for selected patients requiring significant metabolic improvement

Aurora Medical assists GPs and patients in determining the most appropriate therapy based on clinical indication, safety and individual goals.

Holistic Care

Medication is only one part of effective care.
Patients benefit from regular clinician reviews, nutritional and behavioural support, and guidance on lifestyle factors such as sleep and physical activity.
Our long-term programs emphasise sustainability, accountability, and partnership.
