Your Patient Journey with Aurora Bariatrics

If you’ve spent years battling obesity, trying countless diets, and pushing through exercise programs that never seem to work, bariatric surgery may be the turning point you’ve been looking for.

At Aurora Bariatrics & Metabolic Medicine, we guide you through every stage of your weight loss journey — from your first consultation to long-term follow-up — so you feel supported, informed, and ready for lasting change.

Step 1: Your Initial Consultation & Medical Assessment

Not everyone is suited for surgery, and that’s okay. Our first step is to get a complete picture of your health and goals through a comprehensive medical assessment, which may include:

  • Review of your general health and medical history
  • Discussion about your lifestyle, motivations, and long-term goals
  • Behavioural health screening to understand your habits, triggers, and challenges

We may also arrange further pre-surgery tests such as:

  • Cardiac testing
  • Sleep studies
  • X-rays

If your weight is linked to complex emotional or behavioural factors — such as emotional eating, inactivity, or repeated weight loss and regain — we may also recommend seeing our psychologist for a more in-depth assessment.

These steps ensure you are physically and emotionally ready for surgery, and that we tailor your care plan to give you the best possible outcome.

Step 2: Exploring Your Options

Your personalised treatment plan may include:

Non-Surgical Options

  • Medical weight loss with evidence-based medications
  • Structured dietary and lifestyle programs

Surgical Options

  • Gastric Sleeve Surgery
  • Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en-Y or One-Anastomosis)
  • Revisional Bariatric Surgery

We’ll discuss the pros, cons, and expected results of each option, so you can make a decision that aligns with your health, lifestyle, and personal goals.

Step 3: Surgical Planning

Once you and your surgeon agree on the right procedure, we’ll set an operating date that works for you and guide you through the essential pre-surgery steps:

  • Confirm support at home for after your surgery
  • Arrange time off work (usually 7–10 days for office-based roles)
  • Check your health fund coverage (if insured)
  • Book your pre-op consultations with our bariatric physician and dietitian (2–3 weeks before surgery)
  • Start the Optifast pre-surgery diet at least 2 weeks before surgery
  • Complete any required psychological preparation
  • Undergo an upper GI endoscopy if needed

This preparation ensures your surgery and recovery are as smooth and safe as possible.

Step 4: Recovery & The Aurora Care Plan

Your recovery is just the beginning. We know that the real transformation happens after surgery — when you start building new habits and embracing a healthier lifestyle.

Your Aurora Care Plan includes:

  • Regular follow-ups with your surgeon, bariatric GP, and nurse practitioner for 12 months
  • Optional ongoing dietitian support for meal planning, portion control, and food choices
  • Optional Psychological support to help navigate the emotional side of weight loss
  • Optional access to SleevePlus, our unique program combining surgery with medication for patients needing extra support
  • We’ll also connect you with weight loss support groups and provide education to help you stay on track for the long term.

Step 5: Achieving Your Best Weight Loss Results

We see surgery as the starting point, not the finish line. Our goal is to help you achieve sustainable weight loss while improving your overall health, confidence, and quality of life.

Your success is our success — and we’ll be with you every step of the way.
