What’s Included in Your Bariatric Surgery Journey

There are three main phases of care — each with its own fees:

  1. Pre-Surgery
  • Consultations with your Surgeon, Bariatric Physician, and Dietitian
  • Diagnostic testing, blood work, pre-op planning
  1. Surgery
  • Hospital admission, theatre time, equipment, prosthesis
  • Surgical team fees (surgeon, anaesthetist, assistant)
  1. Post-Surgery Care
  • Follow-up consultations with your surgeon and bariatric GP
  • Nutrition reviews, blood tests, and Aurora's After Care Support Program


Your Surgical Options At a Glance

Option 1: Private Health Insurance (Gold-Level Cover)

If you have private hospital insurance that covers bariatric surgery (typically “Gold” tier), your health fund will cover the majority of hospital costs:

  • Hospital stay (~$1,200/night)
  • Theatre fees (~$2,000/hour)
  • Surgical equipment/prosthesis (approx. $5,000+)
  • ICU/CCU if needed (~$4,000/night)


Estimated Out-of-Pocket Cost: ~$5,950
This includes:

  • Surgical clinic fee
  • Anaesthetic gap
  • Assistant surgeon fee

Check your insurer covers MBS item 31575 (sleeve) or 31572/31584 (bypass).


Option 2: Fixed-Price Package for Uninsured Patients

In partnership with St John of God Murdoch Hospital, we offer a fixed-price gastric sleeve surgery package for eligible patients without private insurance.

Total Fee: $21,499
This covers:

  • 2-night hospital stay, theatre fees, prosthesis
  • Surgical, anaesthetic, and assistant fees
  • Post-op follow-ups with your surgeon and bariatric GP


Not included:

  • Pre-operative appointments
  • Dietetic aftercare
  • Discharge medications


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Age 18–55
  • BMI < 45 and weight <150kg
  • No more than 2 comorbidities
  • Medicare-registered
  • Surgeon/Physician approval - requires approval of Dr Blackham and one of our bariatric physicians. During your consultation with Dr Blackham we will give you a complete and comprehensive report of your sleeve risk/benefit calculator, personalised to you. The initial consultation will need to be an in-person consultation; all other appointments can be done via Telehealth.


Option 3: Self-Funded Surgery (Outside Fixed-Price Package)

If you're uninsured and not eligible for the fixed-price package, self-funded surgery is still possible.

Total Estimated Cost: $25,000+
Includes:

  • Private hospital fees
  • Surgical, anaesthetic, assistant, and clinic fees
  • Aftercare support

This is best suited to patients with a BMI under 45 and minimal medical risks. Speak to our team before proceeding.


What’s Included in the Aurora Bariatrics Clinic Fee

Our Clinic Fee covers your comprehensive outpatient care for 12 months post-op, including:

  • Pre-operative consent appointment
  • All post-op consults with your Surgeon and Bariatric GP
  • Administrative support and care coordination
  • Blood tests at 6 and 12 months


Plus: Your Aurora Box
