If you’ve struggled with your weight for a long time, you’ve probably asked yourself:
Should I try weight loss medication — or do I need surgery?
It’s one of the most common questions we hear at Aurora Bariatrics. And the honest answer? It depends on you.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to sustainable weight loss. That’s why our team offers both medical and surgical options — with tailored support to help you choose the right path.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the pros and cons of weight loss medication and bariatric surgery, so you can make an informed decision.
Understanding the Difference
Weight Loss Medications: A Non-Surgical Solution
Weight loss medications are often ideal for people who:
- Are not eligible for surgery based on BMI or health status
- Want to avoid surgery altogether
- Need to lose weight before surgery to improve safety
- Are experiencing weight regain or plateau after bariatric surgery
- Have conditions like Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance or PCOS
At Aurora, we typically prescribe oral and injectable medications. These work by:
- Reducing hunger and cravings
- Slowing digestion to help you feel fuller for longer
- Improving blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity
Other medications may be used based on your unique needs.
Bariatric Surgery: A More Permanent Tool
Surgical procedures like gastric sleeve or gastric bypass are usually recommended for those with a BMI over 30, or those who have struggled with weight-related health conditions like:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- High blood pressure
- Fertility issues
Surgery works by physically altering your digestive system, reducing food intake, changing appetite hormones, and improving metabolism.
Comparing the Two
Medication | Surgery | |
---|---|---|
How it works | Affects appetite, hormones & digestion | Alters stomach size and/or digestive tract |
Typical weight loss | 5–15% of total body weight | |
Recovery | No downtime | Hospital stay and recovery period |
Risks | Mild side effects (nausea, constipation) | Surgical risks (bleeding, infection, etc.) |
Best for | Mild-moderate obesity, medical prep/post-op | Severe obesity, long-term metabolic issues |
Long-term success | Works while on medication | Surgery success is "durable" (long term treatment) |
Can They Be Combined?
Yes — and this is why we are leading the way at Aurora.
After surgery the vast majority of patients lose a large amount of their body weight. The median total weight loss at one year is approximately 30%. Patients also gain significant improvements in other diseases like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and snoring.
However around 11% of patients will lose less than 20% at one year. These patients are “non-responders”, which is more likely in patients on insulin therapy for diabetes, older age, higher starting BMI and multiple anti-depressive medications. These patients will need some extra help.
