Why Consider Weight Loss Surgery?

Your decision to have weight loss surgery is a personal one. Most patients have an excellent result from surgery. At Aurora Bariatrics, even if you opt for surgery, we often use medication to help you become your healthiest self.

Why have surgery?

  • Become more healthy
  • Reduce health problems, and
  • Regain lost lifestyle
  • Greater self worth and confidence
  • Easier social and work interactions, and
  • A new sense accomplishment and freedom

Can I just lose weight myself?

Every patient we see has had some success with one or multiple types of diets or exercise. Generally when they were younger, in a better work environment, or more social supports. But as we gain weight, the ability to lose weight long-term decreases - we know that only 3% of diets work long-term for those with a BMI above 40.

So the more weight your body is carrying, the harder it is to lose.

What about physical exercise? Yes if it makes you feel better. But exercise is great for weight maintenance and not so good for weight loss.  When you're living in a larger body you are more likely to cause sprains, strains and fractures from exercise.

At Aurora Bariatrics we don't say "have you tried this diet?" because we know if you've come in for surgery, you've tried absolutely everything.  We also know, as medical professionals, that the cause of our weight is driven by genetics, hormones, the microbiome - so many things that we don't truly or completely understand.

There is no judgment, only compassion. We will work together to find the best way to build the healthiest version of you that you can be, for you and your family.
